F.C. Internazionale Milano was the obvious favourite to retain its gifted title from 2005-06, especially with Juventus relegated and Milan penalised with eight points. Its city rivals never really had any chance of catching up to that deficit to an improved Inter, which had signed Zlatan Ibrahimović, Patrick Vieira, Fabio Grosso, Maicon and returnee striker Hernán Crespo.

During the season, Inter beat Roma's previous record of eleven consecutive wins set in the previous season. An amazing and possibly unrepeatable sequence landed at 17 consecutive winning matches, six more than what Roma had managed. In the other 21 fixtures, Inter took 46 points from 21 matches, and was never in trouble in the standings, setting a record of 97 points along the way.

During the season, president Giacinto Facchetti died of cancer, with owner and ex-president Massimo Moratti resuming his role, to which Facchetti had been the incumbent.
